“Poetry Off the Page, Around the Globe” (PoPAG) is a two-day academic conference organised by the ERC/FWF project “Poetry Off the Page” (based at the University of Vienna) and Literaturhaus Wien. It takes place on 13-14 June 2025 at Literaturhaus Wien (Day One) and at the Department of English and American Studies of the University of Vienna (Day Two).
“PoPAG” is a forum for celebrating and critically investigating the vibrant form of spoken word poetry, which has gained considerable traction in recent years, with formats such as poetry slams or artists like Kae Tempest or Saul Williams reaching audiences of millions globally.
The aim of “PoPAG” is to bring together international scholars, well-established and emerging, to discuss new developments in the continuously growing discipline of poetry performance studies. Two keynote speakers – Shantanu Anand and Cornelia Gräbner – and 27 presenters from 18 different countries will demonstrate the diversity of poetry performance and its research, shedding new light on the aesthetics, theory, recent history, and politics of spoken poetry. “PoPAG” also features an online conference gallery, in which additional presenters will discuss their work in poster, video, audio or blog form. The artistic programme on Friday night consists of an open mic, with headliner performances by Shantanu Anand (IN), Liz Breslin (NZ), Raphael D’Abdon (ZA), und Katharina Wenty (AT).
„Poetry Off the Page, Around the Globe“ ist eine zweitägige akademische Konferenz, die vom ERC/FWF-geförderten Forschungsprojekt „Poetry Off the Page“ in Kooperation mit dem Literaturhaus Wien organisiert wird. Sie findet vom 13.–14.6.2025 im Literaturhaus Wien bzw. am Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik der Universität Wien statt.
Das künstlerische Abendprogramm „Verse On“ am 13.6 besteht aus einem Open Mic mit vier „featured performers“ aus verschiedensten Erdteilen: Shantanu Anand ist ein indischer Dichter und Mitgründer des Airplane Poetry Movement, der im Forbes Asia 30 Under 30 für seine Verdienste an der Performancekunst ausgezeichnet wurde. Liz Breslin ist Autor:in und Performer:in in Neuseeland; Breslins Gedichtsammlung Alzheimer’s and a Spoon wurde von NZ Listener zu einem der 100 besten Bücher von 2017 gekürt. Raphael D’Abdon ist ein Poet, Wissenschaftler, und Übersetzer in Südafrika und zudem Mitglied von AHN (Africa Haiku Network), ZAPP (The South African Poetry Project) und IPP (International Poetry Project). Aus Österreich kommt Katharina Wenty, eine der erfolgreichsten Slam Poetinnen des Landes, die bereits in über 20 Ländern performt hat und 2026 die Europäische Poetry Slam Championship moderieren wird.
Die Veranstaltung wird in englischer Sprache abgehalten.
